A Few Projects |
|
ROYAL GORGE BRIDGE TRAM: In March of 2011 Heywood Engineering completed a complete drive and control system replacement on the Aerial Tramway at the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park in Colorado. This included replacing the existing Motor Generator Set (MG) with a new regenerative DC SCR Drive and installing a complete new control system featuring redundant PLC’s. Station to station control and voice communication is done using a checked-redundant wireless link and the primary operator interface uses a 15” color touch-screen. The new system allows for fully automatic speed control and docking.
HILTON WAIKOLOA VILLAGE TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM: Heywood Engineering provided a number of systems for the updated resort-wide transportation system at the Hilton Waikoloa Village Resort on the Big Island of Hawaii. Systems designed and provided by us include on-board CCTV, intercom, PA and MP3 audio for three new five-car self-propelled monorail trains, automatic speed control and station stopping for the new trains, new fault-tolerant controls for the wayside track switches and crossing warnings, and a complete new transportation tracking system for the trains and boats. This tracking system displays the train/boat locations and next arrival in real-time on LCD displays located throughout the resort. This system is also tied into the resort-wide television system such that guests can check train/boat location and arrival before leaving their hotel room by simply tuning to a specified TV channel. The new systems were fully engineered, designed and programmed by Heywood Engineering and all system fabrication was done at our facility. Upon completion of the on-site installation, Heywood Engineering personnel provided full on-site start-up, commissioning and testing.
BRONX ZOO MONORAIL: We recently provided a complete new drive, power distribution and semi-automatic control systems for the six monorail trains at the Bronx Zoo in New York City. This system includes multiple vector drives and motors, PLC based control and DeviceNet data communication on each train. Additionally, the existing fixed-block signal system was enhanced with wireless transmitters to allow for automatic train stopping at block transitions if necessary. An automatic “speed profile” was included such that the trains with speed-up and slow-down through-out the trip as the trains approach and pass the various animal exhibits. Certain zones can be bypassed if the animals are not on exhibit during the tour. The new system was fully engineered, designed and programmed by Heywood Engineering and all drive/control panel fabrication was done at our facility in Reno, NV. We also handled the installation of the new systems into the trains and all on-site start-up and testing.
GREAT AMERICA SKYTOWER: Heywood Engineering recently provided a complete new drive and control system for the Skytower Ride at Great America Theme Park in California. This ride is a rotating observation tower featuring dual DC Motors for elevator control as well as AC motors for passenger cabin rotation. The existing motor-generator (MG) set was replaced with redundant full regen DC SCR drives. The ride features redundant PLC’s and touch HMI for operator control and monitoring. Heywood Engineering handled engineering, design, programming, fabrication, on-site start-up and full system testing and acceptance.
BELLAGIO—MONTE CARLO AUTOMATED PEOPLE MOVER: This project involved the complete re-design of the electrical control, communication and propulsion systems on the Automated People Mover connecting the Bellagio and Monte Carlo hotels in Las Vegas, NV. Heywood Engineering provided all of the engineering, programming, materials procurement, panel/system fabrication, on-site installation, start-up and testing. The control system was designed and built using the “Checked Redundancy” principle for high level security, safety and reliability. The system includes multiple fiber-optic and wireless communication networks covering data, audio and video. The fully automated system includes distributed power control, distributed propulsion drives, automated door control, automated audio/video messaging, CCTV, emergency communication and emergency recovery systems. The entire system has since been removed and replaced to make way for the new City Center project.
CLARION HEALTH PEOPLE MOVER: Heywood Engineering, Inc. provided various engineering and system integration services on the fully automated people mover connecting the Methodist and IU Riley Hospitals in Indianapolis, IN. This system is the largest privately built and privately controlled people mover running over a public right-of-way in the US. Heywood Engineering’s involvement in the project included: · Acting as a third-party consultant to the general contractor regarding the automated control and propulsion system. This included generating the control/drive system specification, assisting in vendor selection, reviewing all vendor submittals, inspecting and monitoring vendor activities and assisting with overall system testing and commissioning. · Providing the complete propulsion power distribution design. This included a 4160V feed to multiple power drops along the guideway, emergency back-up generator, automatic transfer, and 480V 3-phase distribution to the trains via power rails. · Providing complete train on-board power distribution design and equipment. Heywood Engineering designed all of the on-board 480VAC, 120VAC and 24VDC power distribution. We also fabricated all of the on-board power distribution panels. · Providing complete wayside and on-board Audio/Video and CCTV system design and equipment. This includes emergency communication between the train and control room, on-board paging, on-board automated audio/video messaging, station emergency communication, station paging, station automated audio messaging, station informational display messaging, and station CCTV. Heywood Engineering designed and programmed the systems, fabricated all of the equipment/panels in our shop, installed the systems and provided start-up and testing.
DETACHABLE CHAIRLIFT DRIVE/CONTROL REPLACEMENT: Heywood Engineering has provided drive and control upgrades and replacements on numerous detachable chairlifts. This includes lifts manufactured by Doppelmayr, CTEC and Poma. Projects have ranged from complete Drive/Control system replacement as was done on the Siberia Express Poma Detachable at Squaw Valley to drive only replacements, return station complete control replacement, grip force system upgrades and anti-collision/spacing PLC replacement. The Siberia system includes a new 600HP DC Regenerative Drive system, PLC based redundant control system, slaved AC Vector drive (for accelerator/decelerator control) and multiple color operator interface touch-screens (HMI). This system also includes fiber-optic communication from the drive to return stations of the lift.
FIXED-GRIP CHAIRLIFT DRIVE/CONTROL REPLACEMENT: Heywood Engineering has provided the complete design, programming, fabrication, start-up and testing for new low voltage control and/or drive systems on countless fixed-grip ski lifts through-out the US. These systems include redundant PLC’s, touch-screen operator interface (HMI) and DC or AC variable speed drives to 500HP.
CHAIRLIFT LOADING CONVEYOR & GATES SYSTEMS: Heywood Engineering has provided the complete drive and control system on several chairlift loading conveyors. These systems include multi-range slaved speed control and fully automatic gate operation. |
